Waking up I hear what is going on outside… it is raining quiet heavily. Well well, let’s see. Breakfast and then packing all I need for the day. There are some spots I want to visit and I am not the biggest fan of museums so hopefully the weather gets better – I am optimistic.
Borrowing an umbrella at the reception desk I star walking towards Mount Eden, the highest volcano in the city from which you shall have a great view over the city. On my way I find some geocaches in the rain. Getting closer to Mt. Eden, it becomes clear that the weather isn’t clear enough to climb up the hill and get a view. Everything is covered in thick clouds.
Quick change of plans, I will go directly to the Auckland Domain (Link), the oldest park in Auckland and home to some sculptures and the Auckland museum. The weather is getting better (now when I am going away from Mt. Eden). And the park is really nice. Of course some geocaches on the way, but the Wherigo didn’t work, which was not nice after the work I put into it. A lot of Asian (Chinese) people here and some of them are very rude. I was standing in front of the museum, camera on the eye to take a picture and before I could press the shutter, 5 Chinese line up in front of me to take pictures… unbelievable.
Walking down to the city now, stopping to get a sandwich for lunch and down to the harbor. Most of the shops are closed today as it is good Friday. Getting a nice ice cream at the harbor, checking if it is possible to take a tour. But nothing leaves until later and they are quiet expensive.
After walking around the harbor area a little bit more (which could use a master plan from a good city planner to make it more attractive and fitting together) I go back to the cafe from yesterday to wait for my geocaching event in Auckland. The first of three events on my trip. On my list are 4 attending people. In the end, 12 came. From America, NZ, Belgium and Australia. After the event, a small group went out with a newbie to find some caches (one of which I was unable to find before).
Back home to the hostel. Dinner and preparation for the next day, when I will drive up to Paihia and the bay of Islands.
